Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been dealing with irritable bowel syndrome for some time now. I am a 52-year-old woman and have read about how bowel issues could lead to colorectal cancer, especially as I am on long-term antacids. Despite sticking to some strict diet restrictions, nothing is helping. I am worried about what might happen if this continues. Are there any additional measures I should take to lower the risk of developing colorectal cancer? Can you shed some light on how IBS can potentially lead to colorectal cancer, and what signs or symptoms I should look out for?
kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
So,
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is not a direct risk for the development of colorectal cancer.
You should be eating a good balanced diet, including fruits, vegetables, chicken, fish, meat products, eggs, etc. Just avoid that specific food if you have known allergies, otherwise from an IBS point of view, do not restrict your diet too much.
Too many diet restrictions can cause macro and micronutrient deficiencies and weak immunity, in fact increasing the risk of cancer.
Red flag signs that you should be looking for include undocumented weight loss, per-rectal bleeding, or a drop in hemoglobin without an obvious cause.
Above 50 years of age, screening, and colonoscopy are recommended. You can explore that option too.
Wishing you excellent health.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards.
