What are the ways to manage irritable bowel syndrome?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a female, who just started a new job. During the insurance health check, it was found that I have IBS-D. I was a bit shocked, though I always had tummy troubles. I frequently used to chew anti-gastric tablets as if they were candies. Now, I am worried about how this will affect my new job. Can I manage it without constantly running to the loo? Can you please suggest any tips for coping at work? Also, will this affect my insurance? I feel anxious.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Do not worry, you are not alone! Many people with IBS-D (irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea) live fulfilling lives while managing their condition. Here are some advice for managing IBS-D at work:

  1. Communicate with your employer: If your symptoms are severe, it is important to be open and honest with your employer. They may be able to accommodate your needs, such as allowing you to work from home or providing flexible hours.

  2. Plan ahead: Know the location of restrooms and plan your breaks accordingly.

  3. Carry essentials: Always carry essential items, such as tissues, wipes, and medication.

  4. Stress management: Stress can exacerbate IBS symptoms. Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation.

Impact on insurance:

Generally, IBS-D does not directly affect your insurance coverage. However, if your symptoms are severe and require frequent medical attention, it may impact your out-of-pocket costs.

I suggest the following treatment options:

  1. Dietary changes: A low FODMAP (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols) diet can help reduce symptoms in a few people.

  2. Medication: I advise you to consult your physician who might prescribe medications to help manage your symptoms.

  3. Probiotics: These can help restore the balance of bacteria in your gut.

I hope this helps you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
