Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 30-year-old male. I started getting obese after having a head injury. I heard about hypothalamic obesity.
Is it a type of obesity?
How is this condition caused?
May I know the other symptoms noticed in this condition?
What are the treatment options available for treating this condition?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Hypothalamic obesity is a type of obesity caused by damage to the hypothalamus, a region of the brain that regulates appetite, metabolism, and energy balance.
This type of obesity can occur after:
A traumatic brain injury.
Surgery.
Tumors.
Radiation affects the hypothalamus.
In your case, the head injury you mentioned could be linked to this condition if the hypothalamus was affected. The hypothalamus plays a role in regulating hunger and satiety signals, as well as how the body stores and uses energy. When it is damaged, these processes can become dysregulated, leading to rapid weight gain even with normal or reduced food intake.
Symptoms of hypothalamic obesity are
Increased appetite (hyperphagia).
Decreased energy expenditure leads to reduced physical activity and fatigue.
Insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes.
Emotional or behavioral changes.
Difficulty controlling body temperature.
Problems with hormone regulation can affect growth, puberty, or reproductive functions.
I would suggest you do the following:
Low-calorie diet.
Regular physical activity.
In certain cases, bariatric surgery might be considered, though it is generally used as a last option.
In cases where hormonal imbalances are identified, hormone replacement therapy may be required.
A physical examination by a neurologist and endocrinologist in a hospital is a must.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards.
