Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I've been gaining weight quickly, even though I eat healthy and stay active. My doctor thinks it could be hypothalamic obesity.
What makes hypothalamic obesity different from other types of weight gain? How is it diagnosed? Can brain tumors, injuries, or other conditions cause problems with the hypothalamus that lead to this? Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Hypothalamic obesity is a type of rapid weight gain caused by damage or dysfunction in the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that controls appetite and metabolism. Unlike typical weight gain, this kind often comes with intense, uncontrollable hunger (called hyperphagia) and rapid weight gain that doesn't respond well to diet or exercise. It's frustrating because you can eat healthy and stay active, but still keep gaining weight.
This can happen after things like brain tumors, head injuries, or even brain surgery. When the hypothalamus is damaged, it can become really hard to feel full, and your body's hormones that control weight and energy can get thrown off.
To figure out if this is the cause, doctors usually look at your medical history, do a physical exam, and order brain scans, like an MRI, to check for any damage. They might also run blood tests to look at hormone levels. Treatment can include medication, changes to your routine, and sometimes surgery, depending on what's causing the problem.
I hope that you got your answer.
Please let me know if you need any help.
Take care and thank you.
