How long does it take to recover from HMPV symptoms?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 50-year-old man diagnosed with Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). I have been experiencing a fever, dry cough, and shortness of breath for two weeks. A chest X-ray revealed mild lung changes, and my oxygen levels dropped to 91 percent during physical activity. Blood tests indicate inflammation but no major infection. Despite rest and the use of inhalers, I continue to feel very fatigued and have difficulty breathing with exertion. Could this condition lead to long-term lung issues? Should we consider further tests or explore additional treatments to ensure a full recovery?

Please guide.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for posting your query.

HMPV and prolonged respiratory symptoms:HMPV can cause prolonged respiratory symptoms, particularly in adults over 50. Inflammation and oxygen level drops suggest ongoing lung involvement.

Risk of long-term issues:While most individuals recover fully, HMPV can occasionally lead to long-term lung conditions, such as reactive airway disease or fibrosis, especially if inflammation persists.

Recommended next steps:

  1. Pulmonary function tests (PFTs): Assess lung capacity and identify any long-term changes.

  2. Repeat Imaging: A follow-up X-ray or CT scan can help rule out complications such as post-viral pneumonia or scarring.

  3. Additional treatments: Steroids or pulmonary rehabilitation may be beneficial if inflammation persists or breathing does not improve.

Seek immediate medical attention if:

  1. Oxygen levels drop below 90 percent.

  2. Breathing worsens or severe fatigue continues.

Close monitoring by a pulmonologist is recommended to ensure a full recovery.

Please let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.
