Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 10-year-old son has been diagnosed with Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) after presenting with a persistent cough, fever, and difficulty breathing. His pediatrician prescribed supportive care, but I am getting concerned because his symptoms are not improving. His chest X-ray showed signs of mild pneumonia, and his oxygen saturation dropped slightly. His last lab results showed elevated white blood cells and some inflammation markers, which I know is typical for viral infections, but should I be more worried about pneumonia? Should I request a follow-up X-ray or additional tests to monitor his progress? I have been wondering if he needs something more aggressive, like antiviral therapy or steroids, but the pediatrician has not suggested it. How long should we expect this illness to last in children, and are there any specific signs we should watch for that would indicate the need for emergency care?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
HMPV is not a very aggressive virus. It requires only supportive treatment as advised by the pediatrician. All you have to do is monitor symptoms and record the vitals like body temperature and oxygen saturation charting every six to eight hours. Kindly do not self-prescribe any medication.
Take care of your child immunity by making sure he is eating his meals properly, taking adequate sleep, drinking plenty of fluids orally and he can also sit in the sun daily for 15 to 20 mins daily once. Kindly keep him isolated as well as much as possible.
Pneumonia does not need a follow-up because an x-ray may continue to show certain changes for a long time. Certainly, symptomatic improvement is enough to judge if the child is recovering or not. Kindly send all the blood investigation reports that have been conducted.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
