Can HPV spread through kissing?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have some doubts about STDs. Does kissing cause HPV? I am stressed about whether HPV is transmitted through kissing or saliva.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Kissing itself is not considered a major risk factor for transmitting HPV (human papillomavirus). HPV is primarily transmitted through intimate sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It can also be transmitted through genital-to-genital contact or by sharing sex toys. The incubation period for HPV can vary, but it generally ranges from weeks to months after initial exposure. In some cases, it can take years for symptoms to develop or for the virus to be detected.

While HPV can potentially be found in saliva, the risk of transmission through saliva alone is considered to be very low. However, if there are open sores or lesions in the mouth or throat, it is possible that HPV could be transmitted through deep, passionate kissing.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
