How to manage HMPV?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My four-year-old daughter tested positive for HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) after experiencing fever, nasal congestion, and a persistent cough. Lately, she has been extremely fatigued and is struggling with wheezing and shortness of breath. Could this lead to complications like pneumonia or bronchiolitis? What’s the expected recovery timeline for young children, and how can we best manage her symptoms at home? How long does the virus typically remain contagious?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Very sorry about your daughter's health condition, HMPV is infectious for up to two weeks so isolation requires up to two weeks. Viral infections without complications usually last a few days to a week, but complicated cases like pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis may last up to two weeks. Sometimes primary viral infection may lead to secondary bacterial infection. In case of secondary bacterial infection, it may need antibiotic support. But many cases recover with symptomatic treatment only.

I advise you to do the following:

  1. Use antihistamine (Montelukast) syrup for cold according to body weight.

  2. Use bronchodilators for cough and expectoration.

  3. If necessary do nebulization at home twice a day with asthalin according to body weight.

  4. Use steam inhalation twice a day.

If symptoms do not improve please consult with your treating pediatrician. He will examine and treat you accordingly.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
