Could night sweats and sore throat after 7 weeks be HIV?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a one-time encounter seven weeks ago, and now I am getting night sweats, sore throat, and feeling super tired all the time. I am scared that this could be an early HIV. How soon can I test and trust the results? Also, do these symptoms mean I have got HIV, or could it be something else? Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Night sweats, sore throat, and feeling tired all the time do not confirm an HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) diagnosis. It can be confirmed only with laboratory investigation, so your symptoms could be from another illness. You can get the HIV test done even now, and if it is negative, you can repeat that in about four weeks for confirmation.

Concerning the night sweats, kindly answer the following questions-

  1. Were you experiencing a fever?

  2. Was there a rash?

  3. Any cough or catarrh?

  4. Any difficulty breathing?

  5. Have you taken any medications following the onset of these symptoms?

The probable cause can be a bacterial or viral infection.

Investigations to be done are throat swabs, full blood count with differentials, and CRP (C-reactive protein). Differential diagnosis includes allergic rhinitis, epiglottitis, and the common cold.

A probable diagnosis could be viral pharyngitis.

Treatment plan: I suggest you take the following with the consent from your treating doctor: tablet Paracetamol, 1 gram, three times a day, for five to seven days, hot chocolate beverages, and capsule Multivitamin, one per day for one month.

Preventive measures include-

  1. Frequent hand washing.

  2. Cough or sneeze into the tissue, properly discard it, and wash your hands.

Revert with the answer to assist further.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
