Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 27-year-old patient currently diagnosed with hepatitis C. I am also seeking breast reduction surgery to boost my self-esteem and relieve back pain. I mentioned this to my plastic surgeon, and it was requested that I get clearance from a GI or hepatologist before scheduling the surgery. My primary care physician did not seem too positive and lowered my hopes of having this done. Are there any reasons why I might not be cleared if I am relatively healthy aside from hepatitis C?
Please advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Hepatitis C is not an absolute contraindication for surgery, but it is essential to consult an anesthesiologist or a gastroenterologist to assess your preoperative condition. Preoperative tests, such as SGPT (serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase), SGOT (serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase), BT (bleeding time), CT (clotting time), CBC (complete blood count), HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), urea, creatinine, etc., need to be done to ensure your overall health status is suitable for surgery.
If your doctor evaluates the results and feels you are fit for surgery, then it can proceed. However, the surgeon must take extra precautions during the operation, as hepatitis C is transmitted through the parenteral route, such as through needle injuries. It is also important to discuss with your surgeon about the risks and safety measures to minimize any potential complications due to hepatitis C.
Take care, and I hope this information is helpful to you!
Thank you.
