Can hair fall occur due to genetic reasons?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 20-year-old female with severe hair loss. May I know the major causes of hair loss at this age? I have tried various home remedies to control it, but there is no relief. My mother also told me that she had severe hair fall at this age. Can this hair fall be hereditary? I would like to know some treatment options and medications to control my hair fall and regain my thick and long hair. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Yes, hair loss at this age can be genetic as well as acquired. In your case, your mother suffered from her loss at the same age. It is very likely that the hair loss is genetic and is called female pattern hair loss. On the other hand, hair loss at this age can be due to changes in your body and hormonal level. Apart from that, your nutritional status, stress, and hair care routine may also be the cause of your hair loss. Sometimes, there is no visible cause of hair loss, and we just have to take care of the hair care routine.

I hope this information will help you.

Kindly revert in case of queries.

Thank you.

The Probable causes

Hormonal/ genetic

Investigations to be done

Investigations to be done are Hemoglobin level. Inquire about the menstrual status of abnormal LH (luteinizing hormone) and FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) in the third week of the menstrual cycle. Serum vitamin D levels.

Differential diagnosis

Female pattern hair loss

Probable diagnosis

Female pattern hair loss

Treatment plan

I suggest the following treatment plan 5 % Procapil (a DHT or Dihydrotestosterone blocker) hair spray at night. Tablet: Minoxidil 2.5 mg. Take one tablet twice daily. Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. PRP (platelet-rich plasma) for hair fall.

Preventive measures

The preventive measures are: Do not use a comb on wet hair. Do not use aggressive hair care procedures from the parlor, or do not tie your hair very tightly.

Regarding follow up

For follow-up, I suggest Using Minoxidil (a common medication prescribed for treating hair loss-related problems) and pro-capable spray for at least six months. See the nearest dermatologist or general practitioner who performs plasma therapy for hair fall.
