Can mouthwash help to improve gum health in aged patients?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a little dental dilemma and was hoping you could shed some light on it. I have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, and my dentist is recommending surgery because I have some loose teeth and my gums bleed quite a bit. I have heard that using mouthwash can be helpful for gum health, but I am not sure how it works exactly.

Could you explain how mouthwash might help with my gum issues? Also, I am a bit worried because I am diabetic, and at the age of 58, I have heard that oral health can be extra important for diabetics. Is there anything specific I should know about using mouthwash as a diabetic?

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

At 58 years of age and with diabetes, there is an increased risk of failure of such surgical intervention. So it is better just to get your teeth and gums cleaned by a dentist first. Then, use a Betadine or Chlorhexidine mouthwash twice daily after meals.

Always brush twice daily in an up-down motion after meals, and use interdental brushes too to clean between teeth. It is necessary to maintain your sugar levels at normal levels as much as possible. Even salt water rinses help reduce inflammation and infection of gums.

I hope this will help you.

Please revert in case of further clarifications.

Thank you.
