What could cause recurrent urinary tract infections, bacterial vaginosis, shiny pubic area and swollen labia minora in a woman?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I do not know how to take care of my vagina, I have googled it an uncountable amount of times but always end up with articles and lists of what not to do. My mother never taught me and I am not sure if her mother ever taught her as well. I need a routine I can follow so that I can look after it properly. I always get urinary tract infections or bacterial vaginosis, I am so over it. I wash it with warm water every day, I do not wear dirty undergarments or undergarments for too long (things I taught myself not to do as an adult). I have a shiny texture to my pubic area that I do not see on other women on Google, photos, or friends in general. My labia minora is swollen and irritated. I just need to know how to look after my vagina properly to prevent this. I underwent blood tests and a pap smear all clear for sexually transmitted diseases and sexually transmitted infections. I recurrently face these conditions. I am not currently taking any medication for this. I have taken antibiotics several times when I suffered from this condition and also used thrush creams. All my laboratory tests are clear and look normal. Please help me.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

I can suggest the following points:

  1. To maintain proper genital hygiene you have to keep that area clean and dry.

  2. Change undergarments two times a day.

  3. Wash your genital area with soft cleansers.

  4. After urination wash your genitals with water and dry them properly.

  5. You should gently shave the pubic hair and use mild lotions. (Avoid moisturizer which contains irritants.)

In the perineal area, the melanin content is more as compared to other body parts which is why that area is a little darker than our body and it is completely fine, there is nothing abnormal with it. Hope this information helps you, feel free to ask further queries.

Regards.
