What are the treatments for ear congestion?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been having problems with my ears for almost a year now, and I keep hearing clicking sounds similar to those heard on a plane. I know it is the Eustachian Tube. Every time my ear clicks, I feel snot stream down my throat. My ears have also become very sensitive to sound. I went to an ENT who evaluated my outer ear and determined it to be perfectly good. I had an audiometry test done, and my hearing is absolutely fine. I was given the Chymoral Forte course for five days and failed to complete it fully. I did this for four days. For the next week, I felt some relief. Despite the lessened sensitivity, the Eustachian Tube clicking persisted. My ENT said nothing was wrong the previous time I was there.

Recently, it has gotten worse. What shall I do? I am a musician, thus I cannot ignore it because it affects my performance.

I now have a continual eustachian tube that clicks on and off. I can do it voluntarily. My ears are sensitive to both treble and bass. I wear earplugs to deal with it. Following the clicking, I can feel minor mucous going down my throat.

Please suggest something.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I just read your query. I can understand your concern. In my opinion, you should take fexofenadine tablets twice a day. It will help with throat and mucous issues. It can also indirectly alleviate symptoms of the eustachian tube. So you can try Fexofenadine.

I hope that you got your answer.

Please let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Followup 1.1 query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

What should be the duration of this course? How long should I take this for? Also is there any potential health risk for taking this medicine for a long time? What do you think is the possible cause for this? Since I have had it for a long time now I have tried so many medicines but to no relief. I have constant ear clicking as if my tubes are always blocked and sound sensing is very high. I have to use earplugs to go about my daily life. I have Zyrtec tablets with me, will they work the same as Allegra? Considering both are Anti Histamines. If not, how is Allegra better? Do suggest some alternatives (just in case). Will Allegra make me drowsy?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

You can try for five days initially. If it is helping you then you can take it for a prolonged period like one to two months. It is safe for long-term use. It is not causing any drowsiness. It is superior in terms of effectiveness and less side effects as compared to Zyrtec. So it is far better than Zyrtec. Most likely you are having eustachian tube dysfunction. It might be idiopathic or due to your profession.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
