Is ear pain and swollen cheek after tooth extraction normal?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had four wisdom teeth cut out and one permanent tooth on the 25th, three teeth on one side and two things on the other side on 28th. My left ear started to hurt and is still hurting but my right ear is not. The bottom of my cheek is sore and still a little swollen and near my teeth on the inside, I kind of feel a throbbing pain. I am on an antibiotic but is this normal or not?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Some throbbing pain and discomfort are normal for a week after extraction. If the pain is severe even after five days, it means you may have a dry socket condition. Also, if the ear pain is severe, you may have an active infection. Continue antibiotics. Use warm salt water gargle twice a day for a week. If the pain is unbearable, I would suggest you go for a checkup. if you could send a picture of the area, it will be good for more details and diagnosis.
