Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My sister is 42 years old with a body mass index (BMI) of 42 and has been struggling with weight issues for years. Despite trying various diet and exercise plans, she has been unable to achieve significant weight loss. She is also pre-diabetic and experiences knee problems due to her weight. Her doctor has suggested metabolic surgery and mentioned both sleeve gastrectomy and adjustable gastric banding as potential options. We are trying to understand which surgery would be the better choice for her. She is looking for significant weight loss in a shorter time frame, as her mobility is becoming increasingly difficult. Additionally, we are concerned about whether she will need to take vitamins or other medications for life after the surgery. She has a desk job and cannot take an extended period off work, so we would like to know what the recovery process looks like. Are there any major risks associated with these procedures that we should be aware of?
Kindly advise.
Hello,
Welcome to iCliniq.
I understand your concerns.
Both sleeve gastrectomy and adjustable gastric banding are effective weight-loss surgeries, but they offer different benefits and considerations. Sleeve gastrectomy involves removing a portion of the stomach to reduce its size, leading to significant and faster weight loss compared to gastric banding. However, it is a more invasive procedure and requires a longer recovery time. Patients typically need to take vitamins and supplements for life to prevent nutritional deficiencies.
Adjustable gastric banding involves placing a band around the upper part of the stomach to create a small pouch, limiting food intake and promoting weight loss. This procedure is less invasive and has a shorter recovery time, but weight loss is usually slower and less significant compared to sleeve gastrectomy. Additionally, the band may require adjustments over time.
Recovery from sleeve gastrectomy typically takes about two to four weeks, whereas gastric banding may take one to two weeks. Given your sister’s desk job, she might be able to return to work sooner with gastric banding.
Both surgeries carry risks, including infection, bleeding, and complications related to anesthesia. It is important to discuss these options with her healthcare provider to determine the best choice based on her specific health conditions and goals.
I hope this information helps. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
