How can chronic back pain be treated effectively?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

For more than five years, my sister has had back problems. Two years ago, her condition worsened, and she could no longer sit or walk. She was hospitalized, put on medication, and underwent physiotherapy (Kinesiterape). Over the past year, her condition improved, and she was able to walk, albeit with a back support belt. However, for the past week, her symptoms have returned, and she can no longer get out of bed due to severe lower back pain. She is currently on anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain returns as soon as the medication wears off. We do not know what to do at this stage. I am sending you her scans and the medical report from last year.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I'm sorry to hear about your sister's condition. Chronic back pain can be incredibly challenging, especially when it severely affects mobility and daily life. Given the recurrence of her symptoms and the increasing severity of her pain, she needs to seek medical attention as soon as possible. Consulting a specialist in spinal disorders or pain management could provide a clearer understanding of her condition and guide her toward the most effective treatment options. An updated medical evaluation, including imaging studies like CT (computed tomography) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), may help identify any underlying changes in her spine that were not detected previously. If her current medication is not adequately controlling her pain, her doctor might consider adjusting her treatment plan and exploring different pain management strategies such as nerve blocks, alternative therapies like acupuncture, or even specialized physical therapy.

In addition to medical interventions, lifestyle modifications and supportive care can also play a crucial role in her recovery. Continuing physical therapy, if feasible, can help improve mobility and reduce discomfort over time. If conservative treatments prove ineffective, surgical options may need to be considered, but only under the guidance of a spinal specialist. Ensuring that her back support belt is properly adjusted and appropriate for her condition is also important to prevent further strain. Additionally, managing her overall well-being through psychological support, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding activities that exacerbate her pain could significantly improve her quality of life. Seeking immediate professional advice will be the best course of action to address her recurring pain and help her regain some level of movement with comfort.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
