How to manage autistic children?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son was just diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, and I am worried. He is only 4 years old, and I cannot stop crying. Is there any way to reverse this? I have heard some people talk about curing autism, but is that even possible? What treatments are available? Are there any medicines that he can take? I am scared of side effects – could they make things worse? Will he ever be able to live a normal life? I feel so helpless. I need to know everything I can do to help him. Are there special diets or therapies that work? I am desperate for any advice or hope you can give me. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I am sorry to hear about your son's diagnosis. Receiving such news can be overwhelming, and it is natural to feel scared and helpless. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition. While there is no known cure, there are many treatments and interventions that can help your son lead a fulfilling life. While ASD cannot be cured, many interventions can significantly improve your child's abilities and quality of life.

The earlier the intervention, the better the outcomes. Early intervention can help your son develop crucial skills. I suggest the following treatments and therapies:

1. Behavioral therapies: Some behavioral therapies include applied behavior analysis (ABA) (one of the most widely used therapies; it focuses on improving specific behaviors such as social skills, communication, and academics).

2. Occupational therapy (OT): Helps with daily living skills and sensory integration.

3. Speech therapy: It is essential for improving communication skills.

4. Medications: Medications cannot cure autism but can help manage symptoms like irritability, aggression, and hyperactivity.

Other factors include:

  1. Special diets that can help are: A gluten-free diet(an eating plan that excludes foods containing gluten) and casein-free diet (GFCF) (an elimination diet that involves the removal of certain proteins from the normal diet, such as gluten and casein) Some parents report improvements with this diet, though scientific evidence is limited.

  2. Balanced Nutrition: Ensure a well-balanced diet to support overall health and development.

Educational interventions that aid in autism are:

1. Individualized education program (IEP): Work with your child's school to create an IEP tailored to his needs.

2. Special education services: Seek programs designed for children with ASD.

3. Support for parents counseling and support groups: Joining a support group can provide emotional support and practical advice from other parents.

4. Respite care: Take breaks to care for yourself and avoid burnout.

Long-term outlook:

1. Quality of life: Many individuals with autism lead happy, productive lives. With the right support, your son can develop the skills he needs.

2. Independence: Some individuals with ASD can live independently, while others may need varying degrees of support.

Steps you can take now are:

1. Consult specialists: Reach out to a pediatric neurologist, developmental pediatrician, or child psychologist specializing in autism.

2. Create a support network: Build a team of professionals and support networks, including therapists, doctors, and educators.

3. Stay informed: Educate yourself about ASD through reputable sources and stay updated on the latest research and treatments.

4. Focus on strengths: Every child with autism has unique strengths and abilities. Celebrate and nurture them.

5. Stay positive: Your love and dedication are crucial. With time, you will find the best ways to support your son.

Remember, you are not alone in this journey. There are many resources and communities ready to support you and your son. If you have specific concerns or need further assistance, feel free to ask.

I hope this information will help you.

Kindly revert in case of queries.

Thank you.
