Does Tezepelumab work effectively for all types of asthma?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wife's asthma is quite severe, and her doctor mentioned Tezspire. We would like to know if it is really worth trying. She has already tried many medications and still experiences flare-ups almost weekly. Sometimes, she even ends up in the emergency room. Will this medication actually help her breathe better, or is it just another expensive drug that does not provide much benefit? Also, are there any risks we should be aware of before she starts? Does it work for all types of asthma?

Please guide.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for posting your query.

Tezspire (Tezepelumab) is a newer biologic treatment that has shown promise in managing severe asthma, particularly in patients with frequent flare-ups, such as your wife. It works by targeting a key part of the immune system involved in inflammation, specifically by blocking a protein called thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), which contributes to the airway inflammation that triggers asthma symptoms.

Suppose your wife has tried multiple medications without success, continuing to experience frequent flare-ups and emergency room visits. In that case, Tezspire may help by reducing inflammation and the frequency of asthma attacks. Clinical trials have shown it improves lung function and reduces the need for oral steroids in people with severe asthma.

As for risks, the most common side effects include reactions at the injection site, headaches, and sore throat. There may also be an increased risk of infections due to its impact on the immune system, so monitoring for any signs of infection is important. While Tezspire has been effective for many asthma patients, responses can vary.

Given that it is a relatively new treatment, it is essential to have a thorough discussion with her doctor to determine if it is the right option for her, especially in light of any other health conditions or medications she may be taking.

Please let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.
