What is the treatment for ankle pain after a sports injury?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am an 18-year-old female. I have been suffering from ankle pain. This problem started when a hockey ball hit my ankle one week ago. There is fair bruising, and its size is seven centimeters. I have been limping for four days.

Please help.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The pain is due to injury only. That is why I suggest you do not put weight on the body and should also walk with support. And I suggest you do an ankle X-ray once to check for fractures.

But most probably, such pain occurs due to muscle injury. So apply Diclofenac ointment twice daily, and take tablet Paracetamol 500 mg once after a meal whenever pain.

Consult a specialist doctor and take medications with their consent. Also, let me know the following details:

1. Is the pain severe?

2. Did you hit it hard?

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
