Do Ketoconazole and Zinc pyrithione lotions cause dry skin and black spots?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello,

I am suffering from an acne problem on my back. The doctor recommended Ketoconazole and Zinc pyrithione lotion which was effective but it made my skin dry and now my spots turn black.

Please guide.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am very sorry about your medical condition. Do not worry; I am here to take care of you.

Regarding your symptoms, I believe you have developed a medication side effect of leaving a dark spot on your skin following an acne vulgaris treatment. Please stop the acne cream and use the following:

  1. Topical 0.2 % Tacrolimus cream.

  2. Topical 0.05 % Clobetasol, or 0.2 % Hydrocortisone cream for one month.

If your symptoms persist, schedule another appointment for follow-up via chat, phone, or video consultation.

Thanks for using icliniq and have a nice day.
