Introduction:

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a condition that refers to a group of diseases that cause blockage of airflow and breathing-related issues. It includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Vaping is inhaling and exhaling nicotine-containing vapor formed by an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) and flavoring produced by a device designed for this purpose. This habit is frequently seen in teenagers.

What Is COPD?

COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is a frequently occurring lung disease. People who deal with COPD find it hard to breathe. COPD has two main forms :

  • Chronic bronchitis in which a long-term cough with mucus is present.

  • Emphysema, in which damage to the lungs over time is caused.

Most people with COPD have a combination of both conditions. Smoking is the primary reason for COPD. The more a person smokes, the more likely that person will develop COPD, but in some cases, people keep smoking for years and do not develop COPD. Some people have a rare condition in which a protein called alpha-1 antitrypsin is not present in them, they can develop emphysema without even smoking. People dealing with COPD cough, with or without, often have a cough with or without mucus, fatigue, frequent respiratory infections, shortness of breath (dyspnea) that gets worse with little activity, trouble while breathing, wheezing, etc.

What Is Vaping?

Vaping is the inhaling and exhaling of nicotine-containing vapor formed by an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette). The health risks associated with vaping are:

  • Addiction: E-cigarettes have nicotine in them, which is a highly addictive drug. A person need not vape every day to get addicted.

  • Anxiety and Depression: Anxiety and depression can get worse by Nicotine. It affects memory, concentration, self-control, and attention, too, especially in developing brains.

  • Becoming a Smoker: Young people who indulge in vaping are more prone to start smoking regular (tobacco) cigarettes and are more likely to develop other addictions in the future.

  • Impotence: There are some pieces of evidence that vaping can cause sexual dysfunction in men.

  • Some other problems in such people are sleep issues, exposure to cancer-causing chemicals, chronic bronchitis, and lung damage which can be a life-threatening condition.

How Are COPD and Vaping Associated?

Cigarettes and COPD are a bad combination. People try to quit the habit of smoking but cannot do it. Nowadays, electronic cigarettes (also called e-cigarettes or vapes) are available, which will not harm the lungs. And they might help kick the tobacco habit for good. It is not absolutely certain if e-cigarettes are less toxic than the real ones. Either way, they are not a good option for anyone dealing with COPD. They can cause the symptoms to get worse. Tobacco smoke contains hundreds of chemicals that can cause COPD or make it worse. With e-cigarettes and other vaping devices, aerosol (mist) is inhaled instead of smoke. But vapes can cause the same lung inflammation that tobacco can, and they still possess the things people do not want in the body, like Nicotine, heavy metals like lead, tin, and nickel, tiny particles that work their way deep into the lungs. People get a dose of such things from secondhand vape mist, too, just the way they get it from secondhand smoke.

Does Vaping Cause COPD?

Smoking is the primary cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but if people wish to protect their lungs by switching to cigarettes for vaping, they must rethink. According to the American Lung Association, E-cigarettes cause permanent damage to the lungs. They have also been linked to an increased risk of COPD, as researchers have found. Vaping can even make COPD get worse. However, there is not enough research done to prove that e-cigarettes are the actual reason for causing it. It takes years for COPD to develop, and e-cigarettes have not been around for that long. One short-term study revealed that people who vape get COPD more frequently than people who do not vape. However, other studies did not suggest this.

Does Vaping Make Existing COPD Worst?

If a person already is a COPD patient who is a smoker, vaping is likely better, but it is not ideal. The ideal thing can be only the cessation of smoking, which is a bit difficult to do. Some research suggests that switching to vaping might help in quitting smoking. In a 2019 study in The New England Journal of Medicine, United Kingdom (UK) researchers found that e-cigarettes were more effective when compared to nicotine patches when behavioral support programs accompany them. A 2022 Cochrane review of the potential of vaping as a smoking cessation method also found that vaping can be helpful, but the authors note that further research is required to answer this question completely.

But there is something to keep in mind: The United States Food and Drug Administration does not consider e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation method, and it does not allow the makers of e-cigarettes to claim that their products can help people to quit. As per a pulmonologist, vaping is harmful as it can cause pathological changes in the lungs, including inflammation and scarring, which are irreversible. It causes permanent damage as well.

What Harmful Chemicals Are Present in E-cigarettes?

Like the smoke of tobacco, this aerosol contains nicotine, which is a highly addictive chemical compound. It is what keeps people reaching for the cigarettes or the vape. If they are trying to quit smoking, therefore, vaping will not help. Vaping somewhat resembles what happens in the bloodstream with smoking, where people have a high nicotine level after smoking, followed by a drop. When people have not smoked in a bit, the drop in nicotine in their system will cause them to crave a cigarette. E-cigarettes cause the same craving. Vaping perpetuates that cycle. It might not allow to quit because, physiologically, it allows for the same nicotine peaks and troughs to occur. Vaping aerosol, as per the American Lung Association, also possesses carcinogens like formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, which are both aldehydes that are also contained in cigarette smoke.

Therefore, quitting smoking is the best way to reduce the risk of COPD. It is also the most important thing to do if a person is diagnosed with the disease, as smoking will make it worse. Vaping might be better than smoking, but that does not mean doctors recommend it. It also causes real harm.

Conclusion:

COPD is a term used for a number of lung diseases that block airflow and make it difficult for people to breathe. The usual forms of COPD are emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Vaping is the inhaling and exhaling of nicotine-containing vapor formed by an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette). It is seen that there are several health risks associated with vaping, as it contains several compounds similar to cigarettes. Therefore, quitting smoking is the best way to reduce the risk of COPD.
