Is there nerve damage after my wisdom teeth extraction?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I just got my wisdom teeth taken out a week ago, but I cannot feel the bottom left side of my jaw when I chew or bite something. Before I got them taken out, they told me there was a chance that it might hit a nerve and that I would not feel anything in my jaw anymore. Has this happened to me now? Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Yes, this may happen following a tooth removal and there is a possibility that your nerve might have been involved. The wisdom tooth sometimes touches the nerve which supplies the lower jaw. And if the position of your tooth was like that then yes, they have hit the nerve. But in this case, no one is responsible. It was a tooth that was touching it and they had to pull it out to save the whole jaw.

Sometimes, it is the anesthesia that affects the nerve. Try eating chocolate, since they sometimes carry sensation back if it is due to the effect of anesthesia. If not, then visit the dentist once to tell them about the effects of extraction so that they will prescribe you medications or do something to restore your sensation.

Thank you for consulting me.
