Can mouthwash help resolve inflammation around wisdom teeth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a wisdom tooth partially covered with my gum. However, the tissue has since been bruised and sore and popped with pus and blood. As a result, I also have slight jaw pain. The pain has been unbearable for the last two days, especially while lying down.

The pain has reduced after the pus came out. I have had a history of gum disease in the past also. To clean the area, I did a warm salt water rinse and Chlorhexidine Gluconate 0.12 %. Will that heal the area?

Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

This is pericoronitis with abscess and a condition that needs a dentist's good cleaning of the area with saline. If required, the flap overlying may be surgically removed. You will be advised for an X-ray first, then the required treatment. Since you have an abscess, it is advised you take antibiotics for three days. I would suggest you take -

  1. Tablet Amoxycillin 500 mg thrice daily for three days.
  2. Tablet containing Ibuprofen 400 mg, Paracetamol 325 mg, and Caffeine 25 mg thrice for three days.
  3. Tablet Metronidazole 400 mg thrice daily for three days.

Consult specialist doctors, discuss with them, and take medicines with their consent. You can do a warm salt water rinse or Chlorhexidine rinse along with medications.

Hope I have clarified your query.

Thank you.
