Can white discharge occur after taking antibiotics?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been having white discharge for the last month. I have taken medicine for this AF4 kit three times, but it has not made much difference. It was the same for three months, but I also had a UTI. It got better after taking medicine for it.

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Persistent white discharge, especially over a month, despite taking the AF4 kit (Azithromycin, Ornidazole, and Fluconazole) multiple times, suggests that there might be an ongoing issue that is not being fully addressed by the treatment you have received so far. Given your history of a UTI (urinary tract infection) and the fact that the discharge persists, it could be related to several possible causes, including:

1. Recurrent or untreated infection: Even though you took the AF4 kit, which likely targeted fungal or bacterial infections, the treatment might not have been fully effective in resolving the underlying issue. This could be due to resistance, inappropriate antibiotic or antifungal use, or a different infection.

2. Vaginal or cervical infection: There could be an underlying infection in the vaginal or cervical area that requires different treatment. It is also possible that your body is responding to an infection with discharge, even after initial treatment. Conditions like bacterial vaginosis or a sexually transmitted infection (STI) could also cause persistent discharge.

3. Hormonal imbalance: Hormonal fluctuations, especially around menstruation or due to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can cause abnormal discharge.

4. Yeast infection: Despite treatment with AF4, yeast infections can sometimes persist or reoccur if the underlying cause is not addressed.

Since the tests were normal when you checked, and you have had an episode of UTI, it is important to follow up with your healthcare provider for a more thorough evaluation. It might include:

  1. Further tests: You may need more specific tests to identify any bacterial or fungal infections that were not previously identified.

  2. Culture tests: A vaginal or cervical swab culture might provide more insight into the cause of the discharge.

  3. Ultrasound review: While the USG (ultrasonography) was normal, if there are concerns about reproductive health, it might be worthwhile to repeat or get more detailed imaging.

It is highly recommended to consult with your gynecologist or healthcare provider, who may consider further diagnostic testing (for example, swab cultures, blood tests, or a pelvic examination) and potentially adjust your treatment plan.

Persistent symptoms, especially if accompanied by pain or discomfort, should not be ignored, so seeking medical advice sooner rather than later is important to get the right treatment and avoid complications.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
