How to maintain skin firmness post weight loss?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have achieved significant weight loss, but now I am dealing with excess skin. Can you provide information on how collagen is related to skin elasticity and how it might be affected after weight loss? Additionally, are there specific strategies or treatments that can help improve skin firmness and reduce excess skin post-weight loss? I want to understand the role of collagen and explore options for addressing this concern.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I just read your query. I can understand your concern.

Excessive weight loss suddenly can lead to skin sagging and extra skin on the body and face which can be reduced and treated with multiple procedures and medications along with lifestyle changes.

As you have mentioned, collagen is one of the main elements in the body, which helps keep the skin tight by making sure that the skin remains elastic. Children and young adults tend to have more elasticity in their skin because of the high collagen content, which unfortunately tends to reduce with age and with changes in the skin along with exposure to harsh chemicals, air pollution, smoking or drinking habits, stress, irregularities, and sleep which causes the collagen to become less active thereby reducing the skin turnover and causing the skin to sag more due to reduction in elasticity of the skin.

The best at-home remedy to bring back healthy skin is to do an oil massage with coconut oil once every three days before bathing and keeping it for at least an hour.

Collagen powders that consist of hyaluronic acid and marine collagen can be used by mixing eight grams in 100 mL of water daily after dinner for three months.

Making sure to use hyaluronic acid-containing serums like the ordinary hyaluronic acid with B5 serum in three to four drops of the entire face after using face wash will help keep this skin more plump, less saggy, and beautiful.

Apart from the same, fish, seafood, spinach, almonds, chicken breast, and at least 2.5 L of water per day daily will help strengthen the skin and keep it less saggy.

Multiple treatments are also available, including HIFU high-intensity focused ultrasound. In this treatment, ultrasound waves are used to lift the skin, which is a painless procedure that is usually done once every six weeks for four to six sessions for the best results.

Thread lifting by insertion threads through the skin and lifting it upwards will also help in reducing the sagginess of the skin which can also be combined with the above procedure and can be done together simultaneously.

Radiofrequency techniques are also available which help in lifting the skin and keeping the skin tight which can also be done along with the above procedures by alternating with each other for achieving the best results for excessive saggy skin.

One of the best and the latest techniques that help in lifting your skin and keeping skin youthful and tight includes MNRF, which is microneedling radio frequency, which includes the insertion of microneedles into the skin which also radiates radio frequency waves into the skin to heat the underlying skin tissue which increases collagen and helps in providing elasticity to the skin. This is usually done once a month for four to six sessions.

Apart from these non-surgical modalities of treatment, there are also surgical modalities that help lift the skin which is done by a general surgeon or a plastic surgeon.

I hope I have answered your questions.

Thank you.

Regards.
