How can one regain skin elasticity following weight loss?

Hi doctor,

I am a 42-year-old woman. I have recently lost a significant amount of weight, which I thought would be a positive change for my health. However, now, I am dealing with a new set of problems. The excess skin left behind is not only affecting my confidence but is also causing discomfort. My skin looks loose. How do I regain its firmness and elasticity? Is there any way to naturally improve my skin elasticity after weight loss? Will that process require any surgery?

Sagging skin which has lost its elasticity is a very common after-effect or consequence following extreme weight loss. There are multiple measures which are available in order to rectify the condition. However, medications alone will not suffice, and a holistic approach may be needed with respect to diet, home remedies, procedures, as well as medications.

It is important to note that collagen is one of the important elements in our skin in order to provide elasticity. Keeping the skin moisturized on a regular basis using a moisturizer which includes Hyaluronic acid also helps in preventing further sagging and helps in rectifying the current concerns of sagging to an extent when combined with other treatment modalities. A few measures to rectify excessive or sagging skin are as follows:

  1. Home remedies including oil massage can be done once a week before taking a shower. A combination of three parts of coconut oil, two parts of olive oil, and one part each of vitamin E capsule oil and almond oil can be used by mixing and applying it on the entire body which can then be massaged for 10 to 15 minutes and can be left for around one hour before taking a shower. This helps reduce further sagging and helps tighten the skin to an extent that can transfer the benefits of these oils to the skin.

  2. Oilatum soap: Make sure to use mild and soft soaps which consist of Hyaluronic acid and ceramides as this helps keep the skin calm and soft.

  3. HK vitals collagen powder (peptide, biotin) can be consumed on a daily basis by taking 0.28 ounces of the powder and mixing it with 0.03 ounces of normal temperature water which can be consumed one hour before dinner or one hour after dinner for three months. This powder consists of biotin, collagen, hyaluronic acid, and vitamins C and E which help in collagen synthesis and help rectify the current issue.

  4. MNRF or microneedling radio frequency is one method that is highly effective for sagging skin. MNRF includes using a microneedle-containing handpiece that is used on the skin which causes the microneedles to penetrate through the skin and release radio frequency waves which help in secreting collagen that helps in tightening the skin. This is usually done in four sessions after applying a numbing cream once a month.

  5. For extremely saggy skin, MNRF alone will not suffice and may need to be combined with other modalities of treatment like HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) and thread lifting which are procedures that use ultrasound-containing handpieces which are placed on the skin. This handpiece releases ultrasound which helps in rectifying skin sagging along with thread lifting using longer threads to lift the skin by placing the threads underneath the skin and pulling them up. These are also combined with MNRF and can be done in sessions alternating with each other to obtain the best results.

  6. Surgical removal of excessive skin as a last resort in case no other treatments and medications have helped.

  7. Make sure to consume cod liver capsules and vitamin E (Evion) 400 mg capsules as these can help keep the skin hydrated and moisturized.

  8. Moisturizing the skin using a good Hyaluronic acid moisturizer three to four times a day will also be helpful in order to make the skin soft and reduce the appearance of sagging.

  9. Make sure to include lots of spinach, almonds, fish, and eggs in your diet in order to help with augmentation along with other medications and treatment modalities.

With the advent of a number of procedures, the possibility of rectifying excessive skin or saggy skin has become easy due to which I would like to assure you that there are a number of treatments and a number of ways to rectify the current concern that you are facing.
