How to manage vomiting that occurs due to heat?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My six-year-old son throws small amounts daily. He has been on medicines for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The medicines are given twice a day. He mostly throws during school hours because of the actual heat.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Your son’s throwing up could be due to his gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and getting hot at school might make it worse. Here is what can help:

Does your son complain of stomach ache, difficulty, or not passing flatus? Your son’s GERD symptoms, worsened by heat at school, can be managed by

  1. Keeping him cool with lightweight clothing.

  2. A water bottle for frequent sips.

  3. Possibly a small fan or cooling towel.

  4. Speak with his teacher about allowing him for breaks or a quiet spot if he feels sick.

  5. Ensure he eats small, GERD-friendly meals (avoiding spicy, acidic, or fried foods) at least one to two hours before school.

  6. Pack snacks like bananas, crackers, or yogurt.

I have a few questions.

  1. What is the nature of vomiting? Is it projectile and green in colour?

  2. Does he throw up soon after eating?

  3. Does he pass every day, even now?

If all the above points are not answered, then the vomiting could be caused by the environment or climate. Nothing to worry just follow the mentioned advice. You should give him small frequent meals, well-cooked meat. Try to give him food that can be easily digested. Avoid carbonated drinks and soda. Give him plenty of water, five to six glasses, and more boiled vegetables than raw. He should be fine.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
