Can vitamin D deficiency lead to tiredness?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Hello doctor, myself a 36-year-old woman. Past few weeks, I have been feeling tired and weak. Is it due to any deficiency or hormonal imbalance? My periods are normal. I constantly keep worrying that it would be vitamin D deficiency. If so, how to find out? What are the dietary supplements of vitamin D? Should I be taking any other additional supplements to maintain normal vitamin D levels? Please suggest and clarify my doubts.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I understand your concern.

Feeling tired and weak can indeed be attributed to various factors, including deficiencies or hormonal imbalances, but it is essential not to self-diagnose. Plan for these basic tests-

  • CBC (complete blood count).

  • TFT (thyroid function test).

  • LFT (liver function test).

  • Urine complete.

  • RBS (random blood sugar).

  • Vitamin-D, Vitamin-B12.

Vitamin D deficiency is relatively common, especially if you spend most of your time indoors or live in areas with limited sunlight. While sunlight is the primary source of vitamin D, you can also get it from certain foods, including fatty fish (such as salmon, mackerel, and tuna), fortified dairy and plant-based milk, fortified orange juice, egg yolks, and mushrooms. If you are vitamin D deficient, you may be suggested some supplements based on factors like age, sex, and health status. In addition to supplements, consider lifestyle factors that can affect your vitamin D levels, such as spending more time outdoors, especially during peak sunlight hours, and consuming a balanced diet rich in nutrients.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Regards.

Thank you.
