What causes neck lesions resembling smallpox or burnt skin?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My friend has some smallpox on his neck. It looks like burned skin. What can it be?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. You did not mention the duration of the condition or symptoms if any. Clinically it looks like Paederus dermatitis (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity), a condition caused by an irritant reaction to some insect known as rove beetle. The condition is acute and of short duration. It might have burning and itching sensation. Please review the details like duration, symptoms, treatment taken, etc., to help better understand the issue and suggest some treatment. Take care.
