What does increased diastolic resistance flow on a doppler ultrasound mean?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My recent Doppler scan indicated increased resistance in diastolic flow, along with slight thickening of the intima-media. Additionally, I have a leg wound that has been slow to heal, and I am a diabetic patient.

Could you please review the results and share your comments or recommendations?

Thank you for your time and support.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I completely understand your concerns.

I reviewed your scans (attachment removed to protect patient identity). It seems you are having evidence of peripheral artery disease.

Unfortunately, there is no guaranteed medical treatment for this condition. The presence of diabetes can further complicate the situation, potentially affecting your healing process.

Medications such as Pentoxifylline are sometimes used in cases like yours, though the response can vary from person to person.

If the condition progresses, vascular surgeons may consider interventions like stenting or graft procedures. As this is outside my area of expertise, I recommend discussing a referral to a vascular surgeon with your primary care doctor. A specialist will be better positioned to evaluate whether such procedures could benefit your situation, especially regarding wound healing.

It's also important to ensure you're maintaining proper foot hygiene and receiving regular care from an endocrinologist. If you’re not already doing so, I encourage you to schedule these appointments.

In addition, given the concerns around wound healing, involving a podiatrist might be helpful. They can assess your feet thoroughly and check for any underlying issues such as bone infection.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert if there iare any queries.

Thank you.
