How to choose a mechanical valve for aortic stenosis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have grade 2 to 3 heart murmur and moderate aortic valve stenosis. I just wanted to know which valve is preferred, a metal mechanical valve or a plastic valve? Which lasts longest? Which is quietest? Is there a best brand to request? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The selection of valve material like a bioprosthetic valve or metallic valve depends upon many factors such as the age of the patient, comorbidities, previous thoracic surgeries, previous radiotherapy, risk or redo surgery, and risk of anticoagulation and its complications. Usually, metallic valves last longer and are implanted in young patients, while bioprosthetic valves are implanted in those aged more than 65 years. Please send the echocardiography report of the patient and tell your medical history so that I can guide you accordingly.

I hope this helps.

Please revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
