What does gram-positive cocci in my vaginal swab test report mean?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I received laboratory results, which I need help interpreting. What do gram-positive cocci seen in pairs mean? I had a slight vaginal odor and had undergone a vaginal swab test.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read the query, and I can understand your concern.

You have got a vaginal infection caused by gram-positive cocci. Gram-positive cocci include Staphylococcus (catalase-positive), which grows in clusters, and Streptococcus (catalase-negative), which grows in chains. To clear the infection, I suggest you take antibiotics. Tablet Erythromycin 500 mg twice daily after food for seven days. Consult a specialist doctor, talk to them, and then take the medication. Wash with salt water twice daily around the vaginal and pelvic area.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

Do you know how Staphylococcus or Streptococcus bacteria develop?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read the query, and I can understand your concern.

Mostly, these bacteria come from urinary tract infections or fecal–oral routes. Sometimes in vaginal flora and cervix, these bacteria may be present. These groups of bacteria may cause respiratory tract infections, skin and other infections. Some bacteria group in chain, and some will be in cluster form. Staphylococci or Streptococci are bacteria with gram-positive and negative strains.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.
