Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had sexual intercourse three weeks ago. We used a condom but I have a bit of a sore throat and vaginal irritation. But there are no sores though.

What are my chances that I have herpes? I am currently on PrEP (pre exposure prophylaxis) (Truvada). Please help me.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

I have seen the attachment ( attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). They are tiny dots that can cause contact dermatitis but they are definitely not herpes. Herpes simplex especially genital herpes has got a tendency for severe pain which is quite unbearable over the genital area. The cause of irritation in the genital area as seen in the attachment is basically due to seasonal dermatitis.

As such condom has got very good protection against sexually transmitted diseases especially if it is not broken so the chances in your case seem negligible.

As a matter of precaution, I would suggest you clean your genital area with an antiseptic solution diluted in water after every urination. Simultaneously, try to wear cotton panties to avoid allergies.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

So is my risk for herpes low? And does PrEP for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) lower my chances of getting herpes? He said he tested negative back in January but that was months ago obviously.

Is there anything to worry about? Please give me advice.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The contraceptive condom gives good protection against most sexually transmitted diseases including HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). I would like to know more about the PrEP (pre exposure prophylaxis).

Thank you.
