Why did my child get UTI post pyeloplasty and stent removal?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My child underwent pyeloplasty surgery when he was two and a half months old as he had uteropelvic junction obstruction in one kidney. He had his stent removed. Routine urine microscopy was performed and showed no signs of infections. However, the child has contracted with UTI and is currently taking antibiotics. Is it common to have UTIs in children after pyeloplasty?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

As per the information, your child is about five to six months old. Post pyeloplasty, and after removing the stent, they usually follow the kidney function and do ultrasonography (USG) of the kidney to check for any backflow or narrowing of the junction again. Another thing, the chances of getting an infection after kidney or ureteric procedures are higher than usual but keep it mild; any child can get UTI (urinary tract infection). What is more important is to treat it properly. I am sure they must have done a urine culture and sensitivity test, and according to that, only they must have advice for the antibiotics.

After finishing the antibiotic, if required, you need to go for USG again and another test, MCUG (micturating cystourethrogram), depending on the USG report. In summary, the chances of UTI increase after this procedure. Therefore, give proper antibiotic courses and go for regular follow-ups.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
