How to cure side pain and UTI in a patient with a history of kidney failure?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have extreme side pain and a urinary tract infection. I am taking pain medications, and it is not helping me. I have a history of kidney failure.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am very sorry to hear about your condition. The side pain or flank pain is mostly due to stones in the kidney or ureter. As you said that you have a urinary tract infection, is there documented evidence for that if you have not gone for a urine culture? I suggest you get ultrasound KUB (kidney, ureter, and urinary bladder) with pre-void and post-void volume, urine complete examination, urine for culture and sensitivity, and serum urea and creatinine. For the pain, you can start Drotaverine 40 mg, one tablet in the morning and one tablet at night for one week. You can also take Lornoxicam 8 mg, one tablet in the morning and one tablet at night for one week. Please consult a specialist and take the medications mentioned above with their consent. After the reports, you can consult with me.
