Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 50-year-old male suffering from type 1 diabetes. I am taking insulin every day to keep my blood sugar under control. May I know the other medications that can help treat this condition? Sometimes, I can see fluctuations in my blood sugar levels. How to keep blood sugar levels under control through lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Managing type 1 diabetes primarily involves insulin therapy, but additional options may complement treatment under a doctor’s supervision. Amylin analogs like Pramlintide (Symlin) can slow glucose absorption, reduce appetite, and prevent post-meal blood sugar spikes. Although primarily for type 2 diabetes, SGLT2 inhibitors like Empagliflozin (Jardiance) or Dapagliflozin (Farxiga) may be prescribed off-label to help eliminate excess glucose through urine. Similarly, GLP-1 receptor agonists such as liraglutide (Victoza) can improve post-meal control and aid in weight loss, improving insulin sensitivity.

Diet and exercise play a critical role in stabilizing blood sugar levels. Focus on carbohydrate counting, low-glycemic index (GI) foods, and smaller, frequent meals to avoid spikes. Regular physical activity and avoiding processed sugars are also essential. Any medication changes or adjustments to your routine should be discussed with an endocrinologist to ensure optimal care and safety.

I hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any other concerns.

Thank you.
