Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 18-year-old male. I am worried because my father is a type 1 diabetic patient and has been under insulin injections throughout his life. I saw on the internet that type 1 diabetes can be passed on over generations. Will I get type 1 diabetes from my father? If yes, are there any ways to avoid or prevent it?? What are the risk factors of type 1 diabetes? Is any test available to check myself for diabetes?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Type 1 diabetes can pass through generations. You are at risk of developing Type 1 diabetes because genetic inheritance cannot be prevented. Your genetic inheritance is a non-modifiable risk factor. Obesity, alcoholism, and your lifestyle, including your diet, sleep, and exercise patterns, are modifiable risk factors.
You can check yourself by doing glycated hemoglobin, fasting, postprandial blood sugar, and fasting C-peptide levels regularly for early detection and diagnosis. You can also get a Type 1 diabetes autoantibody profile regarding the same.
I hope that you got your answer.
Please let me know if you need any help.
Take care.
