I am planning for an abdominoplasty. Is it safe?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been considering undergoing an abdominoplasty to remove excess skin after losing a significant amount of weight. What are the most significant factors to consider or questions to ask a plastic surgeon while looking for this kind of surgery? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Abdominoplasty, also referred to as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure that removes extra skin and fat from the belly and strengthens the abdominal wall muscle. Patients in poor health, such as those with severe cardiac illness, cirrhosis, or uncontrolled diabetes, are not good candidates for this treatment.

Smoking harms abdominoplasty as the treatment requires an appropriate blood supply. Many plastic surgeons consider current smoking a contraindication to surgery. Seroma (fluid buildup), wound infection, and skin flap necrosis (death of the skin owing to a blood supply deficit) may be some of the complications associated with abdominoplasty.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
