How soon can I resume daily life after radioiodine therapy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

It has been 10 days since I underwent radioiodine treatment for my thyroid cancer, receiving a dosage of 30 millicuries. I diligently followed isolation procedures in a separate room at home. Now that 10 days have passed,

I seek clarification on the following concerns:

  1. Can I resume my normal lifestyle?
  2. Regarding the furniture I have been using exclusively, such as chairs and beds, can I now share them with others? If so, is there a specific cleaning solution I should use before sharing?
  3. Similarly, I have been using personal electronics like laptops and iPads. Can I now share them with others, and if so, how should I clean them? Is there a particular cleaning solution recommended?
  4. Am I safe to resume activities like going to the gym?
  5. Are there still risks of sweating out radioactive iodine and potentially harming others?
  6. Can I travel with others on a bike or four-wheeler without any restrictions?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I have reviewed the medical history you provided. Typically, radiation treatment lasts for only seven days, so there is no need to be concerned about radiation hazards. You can safely resume your normal routine and use furniture, mobile devices, and laptops as usual. If you feel comfortable, you can also return to the gym.

I hope this information helps.

Kindly revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.

Kindly help.

Thank you.
