Does speaking for a longer period of time cause a painful throat?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 52-year-old male with a height of 5.41 ft and a weight of 114.64 lb . For the last six months, I felt like after speaking from the morning to the afternoon, my throat was painful. I previously had regurgitation of gastric juice. My throat was sore and painful, and my doctor gave me an Omeprazole tablet. The condition looks like a laryngeal granuloma. I am attaching the pictures for your reference. Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have seen the pictures attached (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). The condition looks like contact granuloma. Do you have a history of voice overuse or misuse? Are you a professional voice user like a public speaker, singer, teacher, etc.? Do you have any history of endotracheal intubation for any medical procedure? You need voice rest for at least six weeks, speak as little as possible, talk in your normal voice, avoid shouting, avoid whispering, do not put stress on any word while chatting, and do not keep clearing your throat. Antireflux medicines may be needed, and intra-lesional steroid injections may be required if it still persists. Thank you.
