Is Tezepelumab better than regular inhalers?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My brother has severe asthma and has been struggling with breathing for most of this year. His lung function is getting worse, and his latest X-ray reports were the worst we have seen. His doctor mentioned Tezspire as an option, but we do not know much about it. Is this better than regular inhalers? He is already on multiple medicines, but they do not seem to be helping much. Also, he has been getting frequent chest infections. Will Tezspire help with that? Are there any major risks we should worry about?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Tezspire (Tezepelumab) is different from traditional inhalers because it blocks a key inflammation pathway (TSLP- thymic stromal lymphopoietin) that triggers asthma attacks. It is designed for severe, uncontrolled asthma that is not improving with standard inhalers and steroids.

  1. Works for all types of severe asthma (eosinophilic, allergic, and non-allergic).

  2. Reduces flare-ups significantly – Studies show up to a 63 percent reduction in severe attacks.

  3. It can improve lung function over time, especially if asthma is progressively worsening.

  4. May lower oral steroid dependence if he is on long-term Prednisone.

It will not directly treat infections, but by reducing airway inflammation, it may:

  1. Lower the risk of asthma-related lung infections (by preventing lung damage).

  2. Reduce exacerbations, which often make infections worse.

However, it does slightly increase the risk of upper respiratory infections, though usually mild. Tezspire is generally well-tolerated, but can cause possible side effects.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
