Is Tezepelumab better than biologics in severe asthma?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 17-year-old son has severe asthma that has worsened dramatically this year. He has been hospitalized three times in the past four months, despite using Advair, Montelukast, and frequent Albuterol treatments. His most recent attack was terrifying; his oxygen level dropped to 82 %, and he needed BiPAP in the ICU. His allergist has recommended starting Tezspire injections since his previous biologic, Nucala, did not provide much relief. His asthma seems triggered by almost everything: exercise, cold air, stress, and even minor viral infections. He has missed half of his senior year and has had to quit soccer, which he loves. The insurance has approved Tezspire, but we can barely afford it.

Is this medication significantly better than other biologics? How quickly might we see results? Are there serious long-term risks for a teenager? We’re desperate to help him breathe normally again but terrified of another ER visit.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Honestly, if other biologics have not been effective in his case, I do not believe this new drug, Tezspire (Tezepelumab), will work miracles. However, there is no option but to try, as he is symptomatic, so we can remain hopeful. Usually, improvement begins after about two months of use.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
