Does Tezepelumab effectively reduce asthma attacks?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My asthma is ruining my life despite trying every inhaler and pill out there. I am 41 years old and have missed three weeks of work already this year from asthma attacks. Currently on the highest dose of Advair plus Montelukast and still need my rescue inhaler multiple times daily.

The allergist mentioned a new monthly injection called Tezspire or something similar and said it works differently than other medicines, but it is crazy expensive. Will insurance cover this? Does it work? How long till you know if it is helping? I am so tired of ending up in the emergency room (ER), and my boss is getting annoyed with my absences. Feel like I am slowly suffocating and cannot even play soccer with my son anymore. Ready to try anything, but scared of side effects and the huge cost.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Tezspire (Tezepelumab) (Human monoclonal antibody) is a newer biologic used for eosinophilic asthma.

I suggest you do the following tests:

  1. Immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels

  2. Eosinophil count.

If all these are raised, then only Tezspire will work.

It blocks the inflammatory chain reaction caused by chemokines and cytokines. It is safe for long-term use. The usual dose is one injection every 4 weeks.

Kindly consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and take medications with their consent.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
