Can Tezepelumab affect asthma, allergies, and outdoor activity?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been on Tezspire for my eosinophilic asthma for five months, and while it has helped, I still experience shortness of breath after a mild cold. I had COVID last year—could that be contributing to worsening asthma symptoms despite being on Tezspire?

Additionally, I have noticed an increase in allergy symptoms—could this medication be affecting my immune response?

Lastly, I spend a lot of time walking outdoors. Are there any extra precautions I should take to protect my lungs during allergy season? Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Tezspire (Tezepelumab) is not an immunosuppressant. While it interacts with the immune system, it specifically inhibits the proteins responsible for inflammation.

Maintaining an active lifestyle, practicing good posture, and staying hydrated can help support lung health. Research also shows that regular exercise can improve overall fitness, enhance well-being, and reduce breathlessness, making daily activities easier. Here are some tips to help minimize allergy symptoms and maximize the benefits of outdoor exercise:

  1. Consider the time of day. Pollen counts tend to be highest in the middle of the day, so try to avoid outdoor activities during peak levels.

  2. Pay attention to the weather. Windy days can spread pollen and other allergens, increasing exposure and worsening symptoms. Conversely, rain can help reduce airborne pollen, making it an ideal time to exercise shortly after a shower.

  3. Choose your location wisely. Heavily wooded areas or open fields with grass tend to have higher pollen levels and may trigger allergy symptoms. In contrast, large bodies of water generally have lower pollen counts.

  4. Wear the right gear. Protective clothing can help reduce allergen exposure. Wearing a hat and wraparound sunglasses can prevent pollen from reaching your face. It is also a good practice to change and wash your clothes after returning from an outdoor workout.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
