Does general anesthesia affect the working of Tadalafil?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been taking 5 mg of Tadalafil daily for six months to help with urine flow due to enlarged prostate and erectile dysfunction. I have had excellent results until recently. Five days ago, I underwent a wisdom tooth extraction under general anesthesia. Since then, the Tadalafil has completely stopped working. I tried 10 mg one day, and also no results. Could being under general anesthesia somehow affect my body's ability to suddenly not respond to the medication? Again the medication was working great up to the evening before the anesthesia. Or is this just some unusual coincidence that the drug suddenly stopped working after anesthesia? Please provide your thoughts on this.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand you have undergone general anesthesia five days prior.

You have restarted Tadalafil, and then there is no action. Please specify what symptoms are not being controlled. Is urine control not adequate? Tadalafil has little effect on erectile dysfunction. No evidence suggests general anesthesia affects this medication. General anesthesia, especially opioids, can have some residual actions for two days, not for one week. I suggest you kindly consult a urologist for your symptoms.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

My urine flow is less forceful now than when Tadalafil was working correctly. Tadalafil is the leading medication in the world for the treatment of ED. Can being under general anesthesia somehow affect nerves in your body or alter how blood flows in your body? I have read that anesthesia can have adverse side effects post-administration.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Yes, you are right. Tadalafil does act for erectile dysfunction (the inability to get or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse). Sildafenil is better.

Anyway, I do not want to make any controversial statements. General anesthesia does not interfere with any nerves for such a long time. Can I know what medication was given during anesthesia? Are you on any other drugs other than Tadalafil? How much does your prostate weigh? Any recent ultrasound was done?

I am obvious if there were no blocks employed with general anesthesia, it is unlikely to interfere with urinary symptoms. If the symptom is not improving on increasing the dose, better to consult a urologist. It can be a progression of BPH (benign prostate hypertrophy). It can be a coincidence with general anesthesia.

I hope this information will help.

Thanks.
