How to confirm if someone has systemic lupus erythematosus?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

How to confirm that a person is suffering from SLE (systemic lupus erythematosus)?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Get an ANA test (antinuclear antibodies) done to diagnose SLE. Though ANA is positive in other autoimmune diseases too, it is strongly positive in SLE.

Once this test is found to be positive, it is correlated with signs and symptoms to confirm SLE. In case of doubt, other confirmatory tests would be required.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
