Is it safe to take Midodrine without knowing its effects?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I suffer from fainting episodes, dizziness, severe exhaustion, and chest pain. I have had a brain MRI, ECG, heart monitor, and tilt test. All were clear except the tilt test, where I showed a vasodepressor response. I have had these symptoms for a year. I am not taking any medication at the moment. I have been prescribed Midodrine to treat neurocardiogenic syncope but have not taken it as I am unsure about the effects. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Midodrine (vasopressor and anti-hypotensive) is good for this type of syncope. But I would suggest the following measures first to avoid the side effects of the medicine. Know when and under what circumstances you have such a syncopal attack and try to avoid that, such as standing for a prolonged period. Avoid annoying scene areas such as watching someone bleed or looking at a road traffic accident. Immediately move away from that area. When you feel impending syncope, such as dizziness, sweating, nausea, or blurring vision while standing, immediately sit down in a squatting position or lie down flat. Drink two glasses of water at that time. Try an isometric handgrip at the time you feel down. Elastic compression socks may also be worn.

I hope this helps.

Please revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
