Why do the clitoris and labia minora swell during periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 25-year-old female. About two months ago, I noticed pain in my clitoris area during my period. When I decided to check, I noticed it was present in the area underneath my clitoris. I think it is called labia minora, and it was swollen and pink. I have seen a doctor who told me it seemed to be a blocked gland that could have happened from my period or a hair getting stuck in that area. I had not shaved down there in months, so the hairs were kind of long. He told me to soak the area with hot water, which I did, then it immediately popped like a pimple with white liquid in it. Since then, there has been no pain or discomfort anymore; however, I noticed that there is a tiny shiny pink pimple left over. It almost looks like a tiny sebaceous gland pimple with no head on it. It does not hurt or bother me, but it does make me feel insecure when I see it. Can you please help me figure out what this is?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I thoroughly read your query and understand your concern.

It would be better if you would send me your detailed gynecological, obstetrical, menstrual, medical, and drug history. If you sent a picture of the lesion and a clear location, it would help me to easily sort it out. It could be leftover of a pustule or inflammation or sebaceous gland cyst. It is better to have one local check-up by a gynecology specialist, as you have not sent me a picture of your lesion.

My suggestions for your condition are:

  • It is better to have one high vaginal swab and a swab from a lesion as well if it is coming from that. Collect swab test results and discuss them here.
  • Use warm water. Follow strict hygiene.
  • Use soft, comfortable undergarments.
  • Use condoms and lubricant for sex to prevent transmission of infection, if any.

Check for any other lesion you have, and in case of any symptoms and report them here or to a local gynecologist.

I hope this has answered your query.

Kind regards.
