How to treat painful swollen feet during pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 38 weeks pregnant and I have been suffering from swelling in my feet for the past week. I have tried all ways to reduce the swelling but nothing is working, and it is now becoming painful. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing swelling in your feet during your pregnancy. Swelling in the feet is a common symptom during pregnancy due to the increased pressure on the blood vessels in the lower part of the body. You should ask your doctor to measure your blood pressure.

Here are some tips that may help reduce the swelling in your feet:

1. Elevate your feet: Lie down on your left side and elevate your feet above your heart for 20 to 30 minutes at a time, several times a day.

2. Wear comfortable shoes: Avoid tight-fitting shoes and wear comfortable shoes with good arch support.

3. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help flush out excess fluid from your body.

4. Avoid standing or sitting for long periods of time: Take breaks to move around and stretch your legs and feet.

5. Wear compression stockings: Consider wearing compression stockings, which can help improve circulation in your legs and reduce swelling.

Feel free to contact me for further queries.

Thanks and take care.
